Glossary / F # Frequency What it means The average number of times each person saw an ad: impressions divided by reach. Meta reports it as a column and says it may average 1 to 2 per ad set or be much higher, depending on budget, audience size and schedule. 1 Applies to Every ad Set by Reported by the platform Abinash Senapati Founder, eonik Updated 26 Oct 2026 Checked against Meta on 26 Oct 2026 ## The formula Part Meta’s column What it counts Top Impressions 1 Times the ad was shown Bottom Reach 1 People who saw it at least once Frequency = impressions ÷ reach, as Meta calculates it. 1 Example numbers. An ad shown 90,000 times to 30,000 people has a frequency of 90,000 ÷ 30,000 = 3.0: each person saw it three times on average, some once, some many more. ## What it means in practice Frequency is what makes an ad remembered and what eventually wears it out: the same repetition does both, at different points. Meta’s guidance is to watch it alongside results and ad relevance diagnostics, so the same people are not seeing the ads too often, and to consider new creative or targeting if results begin to drop as frequency rises. 1 It is an average. A frequency of 3 can mean everyone saw the ad three times, or a few people saw it a dozen times and most saw it once; the column alone cannot tell you which. Read it week by week for one ad, beside that ad’s results, rather than as a single number. Reach and impressions both come from Meta, and Meta notes that frequency is calculated using sampled data, 1 so treat small week-to-week moves with care. A rise over several weeks says more than one week’s jump, and a rise in one ad says more than a rise across the account. ## Common mistakes - Treating one frequency number as a limit . Meta gives a typical range, not a threshold. - Reading it without results beside it . Rising frequency alone is not a problem. ## Sources - Frequency , Meta Business Help Center .
