What covers it

The platform’s own interface, drawn over the ad. Meta asks for about 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side to be kept free of text, logos and other key parts.1 It names two things the bands keep clear of: the profile icon and the call-to-action, which would otherwise cover what is there, and it gives the same numbers for Stories and for Reels.12 Feed ads have no band in Meta’s guide: its Feed image page lists the 4:5 shape and the size, and no safe zone.3

A worked example

Example numbers. A Story at 1440×2560 has a legal line 40 px tall, placed 60 px above the bottom edge. The bottom band is 35% of 2560, so 896 px: the line sits inside it, under the call-to-action. To clear it, the line’s bottom edge has to be at least 896 px above the bottom, which is 1664 px from the top or higher. Move it up, and move the price and button up with it, since they sit above it.

How to use it

Draw the bands on the tall layout before you place any copy, then fit the logo, headline, price and legal line into the room that is left. The photo can run under the bands; only the parts someone must read or see should stay out of them. Check it on every 9:16 size of a set, since one copy change can push a line into the bottom band.

Common mistakes

  • The legal line at the very bottom. It sits in the 35% band, where the call-to-action is drawn.
  • The logo in the top corner. It sits in the 14% band, where the profile icon is drawn.
  • Checking the layout without the bands.A flat preview shows nothing covered; check with the bands drawn on.
