Instagram ad sizes for 2026
What Meta’s Ads Guide lists for each Instagram placement, including the one most charts get wrong, and how to make the set from one master.
The short answerMeta’s Ads Guide lists 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 for Instagram Feed and Explore images, and 9:16 at 1440 × 2560 for Stories and Reels, keeping about 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side clear.12 For Feed video it lists 9:16 at 1080 × 1920, not 4:5.5
- Feed and Explore images are 4:5 at 1440 × 1800.14
- Stories and Reels are 9:16 at 1440 × 2560, with 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side kept clear.23
- Feed and Explore video are 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 on Meta’s pages, not the 4:5 most charts give for the Feed.58
- Reels ads may not use licensed music, GIFs or product tags.7
On this page
Instagram has four places an ad runs (the Feed, Stories, Reels and the Explore home grid) and two shapes between them. Most size charts treat the Feed as one size for everything; Meta’s own pages give a different shape for Feed video than for Feed images, which is easy to miss.
Every value below was read from Meta’s Ads Guide on 27 October 2026, one page per placement, and each row links to its page.
- The Instagram placements your campaign runs on.
- Your finished master, with its layers if you have them.
- Original or royalty-free sound for any Reels version.
Step 1Look up the image size for each placement
Images use two shapes on Instagram: portrait 4:5 where people scroll a grid or feed, and tall 9:16 where the ad fills the screen.
| Placement | Shape | Size Meta lists (px) | Keep clear | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram Feed1 | 4:5 | 1440 × 1800 | None given | JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB, at least 500 px wide |
| Instagram Stories2 | 9:16 | 1440 × 2560 | 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% each side | JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB, at least 500 px wide |
| Instagram Reels3 | 9:16 | 1440 × 2560 | 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% each side | JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB, at least 500 px wide |
| Instagram Explore home4 | 4:5 | 1440 × 1800 | None given | JPG or PNG, up to 30 MB, at least 500 px wide |
Image ads, as Meta’s Ads Guide lists them for each Instagram placement, read on 27 October 2026.
Meta gives the clear bands only on the tall placements. A 4:5 Feed image has no bands to keep, so its words can sit closer to the edges than a Story’s can.
Step 2Look up the video size for each placement
On Instagram, every video placement Meta lists is 9:16. Stories and Reels ask for 1440 × 2560; the Feed and Explore pages list 1080 × 1920.
| Placement | Shape | Size Meta lists (px) | Keep clear | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram Feed5 | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | None given | MP4, MOV or GIF, 1 second to 60 minutes, up to 4 GB |
| Instagram Stories6 | 9:16 | 1440 × 2560 | 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% each side | MP4, MOV or GIF, 1 second to 60 minutes, up to 4 GB |
| Instagram Reels7 | 9:16 | 1440 × 2560 | 14% top, 35% bottom, 6% each side | MP4 or MOV; no licensed music, GIFs or product tags |
| Instagram Explore home8 | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 | None given | MP4, MOV or GIF, 1 second to 60 minutes, up to 4 GB |

Reels ads have a list of things they may not contain: Reels published before 15 October 2021, licensed music, a face or camera effect, a GIF and product tags. Meta suggests original sound or its Sound Collection instead.7
Step 3Keep Stories and Reels clear where Meta asks
On Stories and Reels the profile picture sits over the top of the ad and the call to action over the bottom. Meta’s advice is to keep about 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text, logos and other key parts. In pixels:
| Size | Keep clear at the top | At the bottom | Each side |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1440 × 2560 | 358 px | 896 px | 86 px |
| 1080 × 1920 | 269 px | 672 px | 65 px |
Worked out from Meta’s 14%, 35% and 6%, rounded to the nearest pixel.
The bottom band is the large one. A price, a button or a legal line placed where it looks natural on a 4:5 master usually lands inside it on the tall version, which is why the tall size needs its own layout.
Step 4Make the 4:5 and the 9:16, then lay the rest out
Two shapes cover Instagram. Which one to make first depends on where most of the budget runs:
| Shape | Placements | Make it at |
|---|---|---|
| 4:5, portrait | Feed and Explore images14 | 1440 × 1800 |
| 9:16, tall | Stories, Reels, and Feed and Explore video25 | 1440 × 2560 |
The placements Meta lists for each shape. 1440 × 2560 is the largest tall size listed, so it scales down to the 1080 × 1920 the Feed and Explore video pages ask for.
Lay the second shape out again around the same parts rather than cropping the first. A crop from 4:5 to 9:16 keeps the middle of the picture and loses the top and bottom, which is where the logo, the price and the legal line usually sit.
The words and the export
The text that runs with the ad has its own recommendations on Meta’s Feed page: 125 characters of primary text, a 40-character headline and at most 30 hashtags.1 Put the line that matters first, where it is read even if the rest is not.
For video, Meta’s Stories page asks for H.264 with square pixels, a fixed frame rate, progressive scan and stereo AAC sound at 128 kbps or more.6 Export every tall version with the same settings and none of them is rejected for its file rather than its content. Meta lists captions and sound as optional but recommended on these placements.
Before the set goes out
Common mistakes
- Uploading the 4:5 Feed image as the Story.Instagram fits it with bars or a crop you did not choose.
- Keeping licensed music on the Reels version.Meta does not allow it in Reels ads.
- Putting the price low on the tall version, inside the band the call to action covers.
Open the master and choose Resize, pick the Instagram placements, and eonik lays out the portrait and tall shapes around the same parts, then shows them side by side for you to check before it makes them.

Is a square image still right for the Instagram Feed?
Meta’s Feed page lists 4:5 at 1440 × 1800 and accepts shapes from 4:5 to 1.91:1, so a square still runs. A 4:5 image takes more of the screen in a scrolling feed.1
