Ad sizes for 2026, on every platform

The sizes each platform lists for its main placements, in one table, and how to plan a whole set from a handful of layouts.

The short answerFive shapes cover nearly every ad placement: 9:16 tall (Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts), 4:5 portrait (Facebook and Instagram Feed), 1:1 square, 16:9 wide video (YouTube in-stream) and the display banner sizes. Meta lists 1440 × 2560 for tall and 1440 × 1800 for portrait;21 YouTube lists 1920 × 1080 for wide;9 Google accepts 20 display sizes.11

  • Tall 9:16 is the shape most placements share: Meta lists 1440 × 2560 for Stories and Reels.2
  • Feed on Facebook and Instagram is 4:5 at 1440 × 1800.15
  • YouTube in-stream is 16:9 at 1920 × 1080; Shorts prioritises 9:16.910
  • Plan the set by shape, not by platform: one layout per shape serves every placement that shares it.

A media plan names placements, and each platform publishes its own size for each one. Read one platform at a time and the list looks endless; put them side by side and most of it is the same handful of shapes. That is the useful way to read sizes: as shapes to lay out, each serving several placements at once.

Every value below was read from the platform’s own page on 27 October 2026. Each platform has its own page with every placement in full: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Google Display.

What you need
  • The media plan, with every placement the campaign runs on.
  • Your finished master, with its layers if you have them.
  • The platform pages for anything the plan names that is not in the table below.

Step 1Find each placement in the plan

The main placements on each platform, with the shape and size its own page lists:

PlatformPlacementShapeSize listed (px)
Facebook1Feed4:51440 × 1800
Facebook2Stories and Reels9:161440 × 2560
Facebook3Marketplace, search results, right column1:1at least 1080 × 1080
Facebook4In-stream video16:9 or 1:1at least 1080 × 1080
Instagram5Feed and Explore images4:51440 × 1800
Instagram6Stories and Reels9:161440 × 2560
Instagram7Feed and Explore video9:161080 × 1920
TikTok8In-feed, vertical (recommended)9:16540 × 960 or larger
YouTube9In-stream and in-feed16:91920 × 1080
YouTube9Shorts9:161080 × 1920
YouTube9Square1:11080 × 1080
Google Display11Image ads20 sizesFrom 300 × 50 to 970 × 250

From each platform’s own page, read on 27 October 2026. TikTok from the Internet Archive’s copy of 20 April 2026 (last updated March 2026).

Each platform’s page has the full list, including the smaller placements and the file limits: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Google Display.

Step 2Group the placements by shape

Read across the table by shape rather than by platform, and the plan becomes a few layouts:

ShapePlacements it servesMake it at
9:16 tallFacebook and Instagram Stories and Reels, Instagram Feed video, TikTok in-feed, YouTube Shorts1440 × 2560
4:5 portraitFacebook and Instagram Feed images, Instagram Explore1440 × 1800
1:1 squareFacebook Marketplace, search and right column, YouTube square1440 × 1440
16:9 wideYouTube in-stream and in-feed, Facebook in-stream1920 × 1080
DisplayGoogle’s 20 image ad sizes, in four groupsEach size

Grouped from the table above. “Make it at” is the largest size any placement in the group lists, so the file only ever scales down.

Make the tall master at 1440 × 2560 even for TikTok and Shorts, which list smaller sizes: it is the same shape, and one file then serves every tall placement in the plan.

Step 3Keep each shape clear where its platforms ask

Only some placements publish areas to keep clear, and they differ. On a tall layout that serves several, keep clear the union of them:

PlacementWhat its platform asks
Facebook and Instagram Stories and Reels2614% of the top, 35% of the bottom, 6% of each side
TikTok in-feed8Depends on shape and caption length; TikTok offers safe zone files
YouTube Shorts10No percentages; a side panel of buttons and a call to action button
Feed, square, wide and displayNone given

What each platform’s page says about areas it covers, read on 27 October 2026.

Meta’s bands are the only ones published as numbers, so lay the tall master out inside them first, then check it against TikTok’s safe zone file and a Shorts preview. What passes all three reads in full everywhere it runs.

Step 4Make one layout per shape, then fit the rest

Start with the shape that serves most of the plan, usually the tall one, at its largest size. Then lay out each other shape again around the same parts (photo, logo, headline, price, button, legal line) rather than cropping the first. A crop keeps one window of the master: from a square to a 728 × 90 banner it keeps 12% of the height, and from 4:5 to 9:16 it keeps 70% of the width.

File and length limits, side by side

Sizes are half of what gets an ad rejected; the other half is the file. Each platform’s limits for the main placements:

PlatformLargest fileLengthFormats
Facebook Feed video124 GB1 second to 241 minutesMP4, MOV or GIF
Instagram Reels6Not stated on the pageNot stated on the pageMP4 or MOV; no licensed music
TikTok in-feed8500 MBUp to 10 minutes.mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp, .avi
YouTube video ads9Under 256 GB15 seconds recommended.MPG recommended; .MP4 and .MOV accepted
Google Display image ads11150 KBAnimation stops by 30 secondsGIF, JPG or PNG

From each platform’s own page, read on 27 October 2026. Facebook’s video limits are on its Feed video page.

The two that catch people are opposite ends of the scale: Google’s 150 KB for a display image, which a photo saved at full quality can pass, and TikTok’s 500 MB for video, which a long, high-resolution export can pass. Export each with its limit in mind rather than one setting for everything.

Common mistakes

  • Making one file per placement.Twelve placements are usually four or five shapes.
  • Making the tall master at 1080 × 1920 because an old chart said so, then needing a sharper one for Meta.
  • Cropping the tall version from the feed version. The logo and the price sit where the crop cuts.
Doing this in eonik

Open the master and choose Resize, pick every placement in your media plan, and eonik groups them by shape, lays out each shape around the same parts, and shows every size side by side for you to check before it makes them.

Questions

What is the best size for a social media ad?

There is no one size: it depends on the placement. The shape most placements share is 9:16, which Meta lists at 1440 × 2560 for Stories and Reels; feeds on Facebook and Instagram use 4:5 at 1440 × 1800.21

Is 1080 × 1920 or 1440 × 2560 right for Stories?

Both are 9:16. Meta’s Stories and Reels pages now list 1440 × 2560, and some placements, such as Instagram Feed video, still list 1080 × 1920. Make it at 1440 × 2560 and it scales down to every tall placement.27

How many sizes does one campaign need?

As many as the placements it runs on, but only as many layouts as shapes: usually tall, portrait and square for social, plus wide for YouTube and the display groups if the plan includes them.
